2019 | oilpaint on vanvas
46 x 55 CM

In the timeless interiors of Mathieu Cherkit (1982, France), no corner remains unseen. His paintings transport the viewer into the still life of a house, in which only modern details can tell you in which time the works are set. No people are present, but the prominent objects placed in the picture make their presence palpable.

The subject of Cherkit’s paintings is his family home outside Paris; a mansion in an old school, where he lives with his wife and son. They are intimate glimpses that go beyond the everyday. In thick layers of oil or watercolor, Cherkit paints the various rooms of his house full of antiques, staircases and a lush green garden around the house. Using varied perspectives, abstract elements and his signature saturated color palette, he constructs spaces that feel both familiar and dreamlike, as if memory and imagination intertwine.
